Your first single off of your new album is an important one because it is supposed to be that sneak preview to what amazingness is waiting for your fans when they purchase the entire album. If your single doesn’t do well, odds are, your album won’t do well and we don’t want that. You want to pick the song that is the one that will be stuck in people’s heads for days, even weeks. You want that song to be stuck in their heads so they can’t wait to buy your album, just to get a different song of yours stuck in their head. Obviously you are going to think that all of your songs are great, but you still need to pick one that will do you the most justice.
Trust the advice of the people around you. Ask the people that recorded your album which song they think is the best to release. Take a poll between your band and even ask your close friends and family members. You know they will give you an honest opinion.
Once you have a basic idea, take it for a spin with your fans. Pick the top three songs that you were considering and allow them to vote on which one you will release as the single. By doing this, you are also giving them a little preview of your album. This will make your music lovers happy.
Now that you have all of this feedback from everyone take that into consideration while still following your gut instinct. If you truly feel that a certain song is the one that is going to take you to where you want to go, then go with that song. Odds are, you will be right. At the end of the day, you need to be comfortable with what your band is putting out in front of the world because you are going to be the one that has to deal with whatever it is that happens once you do.
