YouTube has been stepping up their game when it comes to social media. More musicians are turning to YouTube than ever before. So what exactly is YouTube’s Music Key? It is YouTube’s answer to Google Play and Spotify. It is the new direction of music streaming.
YouTube’s new focus is making it even easier for people to discover and listen to new music. You are now able to play music in the background of your phone even if you want to switch your browser to surf for something else. It will even play if you are sending a text message or an e-mail. Just like the competition, you can download music for offline streaming as well. You can save and create playlists for when you are away from a WiFi zone. Music Key finally allows you to skip over those annoying ads that no one really wants to be bothered with.
You’re probably wondering as a musician how you can take advantage of this and get involved with your own music. Well, unfortunately all of this is still up in the air for indie musicians. Music Key has not determined the percentage of royalties that it will pay out each time a song gets played or downloaded. Musicians will require some sort of formal agreement with a digital distribution company to get set up with YouTube’s Music Key for the current moment. This can all change in the near future, but for right now, as an indie artist, if you want to get your feet we, you need to look into a digital distribution company to get your music into Music Key. The world seems to be heading towards music streaming, so this might be a good thing for your band to look into anyway. The more exposure you have, the better you will do in the long run, especially now that the Billboard charts are taking live streaming into consideration of placement.
